The California Arborists Association Updated:10/2012

The California Arborists Association, Inc. (CAA) is a non-profit organization of professional arborists combining efforts to improve tree care practices in California. Our organization was founded upon and adheres to “The Arborists Creed and Principles of Practice” (c) 1935, Millard F. Blair.
The purpose of our organization is to promote responsible and progressive arboriculture practices, continuing education and training, and communication between practitioners, educators, researchers, and other green industry professionals. Check out our Workshops!
In our ongoing efforts to support the growth and awareness of the Arboriculture industry the California Arborists Association (CAA) offers the following information to be helpful in your search for a qualified tree care professional and your education of the care of trees. These simple yet effective tips should help in selecting a tree care company which will provide services or consultations for all your various tree care needs:
  1. Look for those persons that are Certified by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) as an arborist and/or tree worker. Time should be taken to ask for their current ID card and number for verification through the ISA. Confirm that they are current in their standing and that they do not have any formal complaints against them.
  2. Look for those persons that are Registered Consulting Arborists by the American Society of Consulting Arborists (ASCA). Time should be taken to confirm their standing and that they do not have any formal complaints against them.
  3. Request certificates of liability and workers compensation insurance prior to work being performed on your property.
  4. Confirm that they have a Contractor’s License through the Contractors State License Board (CSLB).
  5. Ask for references and locations of recent job sites that can be viewed. While all persons passing the testing for certifications & registered status must sign industry codes of ethics and proclaim to uphold current standards as outlined by the American National Standards Institute and Cal OSHA in their practices, not all do.
  6. Get quotes/information from more than one company to determine if you are getting the same general information about your situation.
  7. Certification & Registered status is acquired by an INDIVIDUAL only and does not apply to the company or other crew members/workers. Some leading companies have crew members/workers that are also certified by the ISA - Western Chapter as Tree Workers.
  8. If you are not satisfied with services performed by the company you have chosen, we encourage you to submit your formal complaint to the appropriate entity.
  9. Remember the old phrases "if it sounds too good to be true . . . " and "you get what you pay for". Because of the high risks involved in the tree care industry along with soaring insurance and operating costs, rates per hour can seem high but well worth the experience, knowledge and customer service you will receive.
