Peter Yolles is the founder and principal of Water Insight, a water management consultancy. His fifteen years of experience include water conservation and efficiency, water rights and transfers, environmental regulation, finance, economics and policy. He maintains established relationships with key regulatory agencies, legal, scientific, and engineering consultants and influential non-profits.
Currently, Peter consults for a California-based NGO on water efficiency technology and policy. He consults on the water use metric of the Stewardship Index for Specialty Crops. And he serves as Board President of the Scott River Water Trust, California's first non-profit dedicated to leasing water for in-stream flows and fishery restoration. In 2009, he chaired the Independent Review Panel for the U.S. Department of Interior's Refuge Water Supply Program.
From 2001 to 2008, Peter was Project Director for water resources protection and policy with The Nature Conservancy. He established water efficiency projects, conducted real estate and water transactions, led strategic planning, facilitated regulatory compliance, and managed staff and consultants in engineering, ecology, law, and economics.
As Vice President at Western Water Company, Yolles partnered with California agricultural water districts to conserve and lease water to municipal water districts. He led negotiations, evaluated water savings, and oversaw regulatory approvals from state agencies. These transfers represented the state's first profitable agricultural-to-urban water transfers conducted by a third party.
At GE Capital Solutions, Yolles analyzed water investment opportunities in the municipal and corporate markets. He also helped launch a new timber investment strategy. At the Environmental Defense Fund, Yolles conducted cost-benefit analyses of municipal water supply projects and water transfers. Peter's interest in water, energy and climate began at the Pacific Institute, where he researched industrial, agricultural and domestic water use.
He earned his MBA in Finance from Yale School of Management and Master’s of Environmental Studies in Water Science, Management and Policy from Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. He holds a BA in Political Science from the University of Colorado, Boulder.
Corporate Sustainable Water Strategy
Water-related business risks are increasing because water supply reliability, costs, policies and climate conditions are rapidly changing. Water Insight helps companies think strategically to anticipate operational risks and liabilities associated with water and wastewater, while improving the bottom line for profits, people, and the planet.
Water Footprints for Commercial, Institutional and Industrial (CII) Facilities
Water Insight conducts water footprints for buildings, operations, and industrial activities. Measurement and verification are the starting point for smart management and planning. Saving water reduces expenses, energy consumption and related greenhouse gas emissions. We will recommend improvements that have short payback periods and high returns on investment.
Carbon Footprints for Water and Wastewater Utilities
About 20% of greenhouse gas emissions come from moving, treating and heating water. Working with our engineering partners, Water Insight conducts water and energy evaluations to find out how much energy can be saved and carbon emissions avoided.
Water Marketing Services
Water Insight has partnered for over 10 years with buyers and sellers in the California water market. Water Insight has first-hand experience supporting land owners, utilities, irrigation districts and NGOs alike with services including market evaluation, leasing, and identification of willing buyers and sellers.
