GBCI and the RELi Resilience Standard Work Together
11/7/2017 4:00:00 AM
Today, during the Communities and Affordable Housing Unit at the annual  Greenbuild Conference and Expo , GBCI announced its adoption of the  RELi standard . First developed by the Institute for Market Transformation to Sustainability (MTS) and its Capital Markets Partnership (CMP) coalition in 2012, the RELi standard includes a robust integrative process, acute hazard preparation and adaptation along with chronic risk mitigation at the building and neighborhood scale. GBCI, in conjunction with USGBC, is now leading the further refinement of RELi to synthesize the  LEED Resilient Design pilot credits  with RELi’s Hazard Mitigation and Adaptation credits. GBCI and the RELi resilience standard will work together to develop buildings and communities that offer greater adaptability and resilience to weather and natural disasters. “The increasing frequency of dramatic events has brought an even greater urgency to create buildings and communities that are better adapted to a changing climate and better able to bounce back from disturbances and interruptions,” said  Mahesh Ramanujam , President and CEO, USGBC and GBCI. “We are committed to scaling RELi to become a national and international rating system managed by USGBC and its partner Green Business Certification Inc." A steering committee will be created to refine RELi so as to bring resilience into actionable, mainstream thinking for the design, construction and operation of buildings; for the creation of resilient communities and infrastructure; and for the well-being of people worldwide. The Resilience Steering Committee will be chaired by Doug Pierce, the principal investigator for the RELi 1.0 standard and Senior Associate at Perkins+Will. Alex Wilson will be vice chair, and Michael Italiano and George Vallone of MTS/CMP will provide expert knowledge to guide future improvements to the RELi standard. Doug Pierce remarked, “It is an honor to be part of this critical partnership with the USGBC support of RELi to help rapidly commercialize resilience, the most important, disruptive and expensive activity ever faced by mankind.” Steering committee members will merge thought leadership from some of the world's most progressive designers and thinkers with the global organizing capacity of the USGBC, creating unprecedented potential for a transformation to resilient design in the market. The steering committee will include many members of the LEED Resilience Working Group, including Mary Ann Lazarus, Marc Coudert, Jim Newman, Nick Rajkovich, Rachel Minnery and Jane Frantz. Steve Bushnell, Janice Barnes, Katherine Hammack, and John Williams have also agreed to serve on the steering committee. “This move shows the leadership role that GBCI and USGBC are taking with resilience,” noted Alex Wilson, Resilient Design Institute, BuildingGreen and co-chair of the USGBC Resilience Working Group. “Events this year in Houston, Florida, Puerto Rico and Northern California have amplified just how important resilience is for our nation’s well-being." Wilson was instrumental in the development of the Resilient Design pilot credits in LEED, which are being folded into RELi. RELi’s development was led foundationally by the global architecture firm of Perkins+Will, with Eaton Corporation, Deloitte Consulting and Impact Infrastructure providing vital content expertise and critical assessment. RELi is a national consensus standard, developed through an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) process, focused on creating resilient buildings and communities. Learn more about RELi .

USGBC’s World-Renowned Greenbuild Conference Coming to Mumbai
2/23/2017 9:36:00 AM
Mumbai, India–(Feb. 23, 2017) –The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) - the creators of the LEED green building rating system – have announced that Greenbuild, the world’s largest green building conference and expo, will be held in Mumbai, India Nov. 2-4, 2017. USGBC also announced that the Greenbuild International Conference and Expo will be held in partnership with the ABEC Exhibitions & Conferences Ltd. (ABEC), and bring together Indian and global industry leaders, experts and frontline professionals dedicated to sustainable building, making Greenbuild the ideal space to learn about groundbreaking green building products, services and technologies in the region. “Greenbuild is the place where the passion of the green building movement comes alive,” said Mahesh Ramanujam, president & CEO, U.S. Green Building Council and Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI). “India is the third largest market for LEED outside the U.S., and USGBC has committed to bringing its resources to advance more rapid adoption of green building practices in the country. In fact, green building is projected to grow 20 percent in India by 2018, which makes my mother country the perfect location to hold the Greenbuild conference.” The call for proposals for Greenbuild India 2017 is also open here . GBCI, the certification body for all LEED projects globally—which was incorporated in India last year—will also play a significant role in the conference along with its array of new rating systems designed to advance sustainability in the built environment. Emerging economies like China, India and Brazil are engines of green growth and development varies from two to six-fold over current green building levels. “We are at the threshold for exponential growth in the building materials and construction sector in India, and the green building movement will be of utmost significance going forward. We are extremely pleased that Greenbuild India 2017 will be launched alongside ACETECH in Mumbai making it the holistic destination for the building materials and construction sector in the country,” said Sumit Gandhi, managing director, ABEC. Increased consumer demand has also pushed the world’s green building market to a trillion-dollar industry, a surge that has led to a corresponding increase in the scope and size of the green building materials market, which is expected to reach $234 billion by 2019. Green building is about reducing energy waste and water use; it’s about creating jobs and sparking economic growth; it’s also about protecting the health of our children for the future. The 2016 marquee Greenbuild conference , held annually in the United States since 2002, took place in Los Angeles, California, hosted more than 18,000 attendees and 531 exhibiting companies participating in 138,960 square feet of exhibit and display space on the trade show floor. In recent years, the conference has expanded internationally. In addition to the 2017 India Greenbuild, the conference will also take place in Boston, China and Brazil this year. “We look forward to partnering and working with ABEC,” added Ramanujam. “ABEC is a leader in India, bringing innovation and excellence to trade shows, events and conferences. The USGBC ABEC collaboration will help make Greenbuild 2017 a great success in India.”

GBCI and Environmental Defense Fund Establish Investor Confidence Project as Global Standard for Energy Efficiency Projects
10/5/2016 3:26:27 PM
GBCI integrates ICP Certification for Energy Performance into global platform Washington, D.C.—(Oct. 5, 2016)— Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI) and the  Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) announced today a strategic vision to work together to develop, deliver and promote the Investor Confidence Project (ICP) as the premier global underwriting standard for energy efficiency projects. ICP will join GBCI's portfolio of credentials and certifications, and the organizations will work together to accelerate investment in energy efficiency. The announcement follows the rapid rise in the adoption of the ICP system, including its certification for Investor-Ready Energy Efficiency™ (IREE) projects in the buildings sector, with successful programs and pilots in the United States and Europe. 'Investment in energy efficiency is one of the most powerful levers for transforming the built environment. GBCI and EDF are ensuring that these investments yield positive results for the environment and the bottom line,' said Mahesh Ramanujam , president, GBCI, and COO, U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). 'GBCI continues to expand its portfolio to work toward a greener future, and the Investor Confidence Project is another big step in engaging the financial community in driving smart, energy-saving decisions that will deliver higher performance in existing buildings worldwide.' ICP works to transform the energy efficiency market by increasing confidence in the financial and environmental performance of building retrofits. It offers investors and developers a standardized roadmap to assess risk and deliver on project results by optimizing performance and monitoring the outcome of energy efficiency investments to generate financial savings. By streamlining transactions and increasing the reliability of projected energy savings through its IREE certification, ICP reduces overhead costs to bring energy efficiency projects to market. 'The world's buildings account for about 40 percent of all energy use, and, in major cities like New York and London, that figure as much as doubles. What's more, up to half of this energy is wasted,' said Andy Darrell , chief of strategy, Global Energy and Finance at Environmental Defense Fund. 'ICP offers a system for investors and developers to access the trillion-dollar energy efficiency market, which remains largely untapped and is key to curbing climate change. Our partnership with GBCI builds on ICP's momentum, mobilizing capital to finance efficiency and cutting harmful pollution around the world.' GBCI will work to scale ICP from a project conceived, incubated and developed at EDF in the U.S. and Europe to a market-based standard, housed at GBCI and capable of global growth and alignment with other GBCI programs. 'We've known for decades there's a lot of potential for financial returns locked up in the way buildings use energy. ICP provides a standard platform for project developers and underwriters to use to ensure building retrofits capture as much of this potential as possible,' said Matt Golden , ICP's director. 'The partnership with GBCI will help ICP usher a new era of market-driven performance and achieve global scale.' The ICP system includes more than 70 credentialed project developers, and its projects are deemed ICP-compliant and IREE-certified by independent quality assurance providers . These include leading energy efficiency firms in the U.S. and Europe , as well as other firms that directly interact with energy efficiency customers. ICP is running a pilot through the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities, and is working with Pacific Gas and Electric in California to provide interest-free loans to contractors who develop ICP investor-ready projects. Backed by the European Commission's Horizon 2020 program, and with philanthropic support, ICP has developed Europe-wide protocols and a certification based on national and international standards. It is also working with more than 200 leaders in finance, engineering and real estate in the continent through its Investor Network , Ally Network  and Technical Working Group, including a portfolio of hospital renovations led by the Carbon and Energy Fund.
